CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

‘I wonder why Artie’s abductors chose to leave him in Jolson Street.’

Bess shrugged. ‘You said you thought it was because of Brick Lane market. That there’d be a lot of people about and Artie would soon be found.’

‘And I still think that’s the reason, but why? I also think the hotel where they kept him would have been on that side of London. If not in the East End, somewhere nearby.’

‘It would make sense. And, the man with the dog?’

‘He wasn’t a passer-by whose dog just happened to run into the old bottle factory and bark. He was either one of the abductors, or he works for military intelligence. He could have followed Artie home after he’d been to see his friend from GCHQ and followed him to Mayfair.’

‘What? And then to the hotel where the kidnappers took him and again in the morning to Brick Lane?’

‘No. It wouldn’t have been possible.’

‘He telephoned The Prince Albert’s stage door and asked Stan to give you a message, which means he knows you and he knew you’d be at the theatre.’

‘Artie would have told him where to find me.’

‘Even so…’ Bess frowned. ‘Why didn’t he ask to speak to you?’

‘Stan said the man didn’t want to speak to me. He said he only wanted to get a message to me.’ Ena laughed. ‘If the man with the dog knows me, I probably know him. In which case he’d be worried I’d recognise his voice.’

From the Embankment, they drove along the Strand, turned into Southampton Street and from there to Maiden Lane, parking the car at The Prince Albert’s stage door. ‘And if I recognised his voice, I would know who he worked for.’

Bess pulled on the handbrake. ‘You know what? The whole thing was a bloody set up to waste our time.’

‘I agree. But why?’
